The Other Side of Christmas…a day of sadness

So many minds, so many thoughts
surround Christmas, not just in a religious sense,
but the connection or disconnection of family,
so many souls suffering, being alone
and perhaps isolated from the world.
For this reason Christmas can represent
the best of intentions and joy
as well as the saddest day of the year,
many people unable to give to their children
the real joy and excitement of Christmas.
Christmas is not about money,
expensive gifts or lavish feasts,
its about family sharing, giving and receiving,
and whether you are religious or not,
Christmas is a powerful day, in many extremes.
For families broken for whatever reason,
it is a time of loss, a time of regret
for all that split a family,
for all that maligned our most valued group,
and in that, a day of mourning.
Often death can mark the day,
the sudden realization that the family is incomplete,
and so memories and heartache darken the day,
family members unable to feel that Christmas spirit,
or fully accept their loss.
Family disputes and contention
may severely encumber the celebration,
and pride and stubbornness create separation,
people unable to retrace their steps and forgive,
which is so against the Christmas spirit.
So behind all the smiles, the retail expenditure
and the never-ending preparations for the day,
Christmas has two distinct sides,
so when you get together in love and sharing,
just remember the many folk who find the day so difficult.
In the end we are human,
we are not without fault, but have the capacity to forgive,
and on such a day as Christmas,
that would seem appropriate,
yet often it is a bridge too far to cross.

It is hard to believe that such a joyful day has a dark side also, yet it is so true. There are people who spend the day alone with memories that cause sadness. It is good to remember this so thoughts of love and acts of kindness can touch the hearts of those who so need it. Well done, Tony.
Thanks Phyllis, strangely enough Christmas records the highest suicide rates of the year. It really should be a time of sharing with everyone, again let kindness be our guide. Take care.
Yes, Tony, Christmas does have two sides and it’s not joy and happiness for all. It can be the loneliest time of year for those who are alone. I know two people personally who dread the coming of Christmas because they had loved ones die close to or on this date. Thanks you for sharing.
My pleasure John, and I’d like to wish you and your family a very Merry Christmas and thank you for your work on the site. It is a pleasure to write here. Cheers!
