Approaching

Approaching

Approaching storm in winter’s chill…

Inevitably, the sun wanes,
seasons dragging its arc to shallow,
and the festering chill seeps the horizon,
clawing its way across the fading blue,
to enshroud life in its bitter tale.

And vision narrows to a blinkered din,
sight hazed of figures flailing,
preparing abodes and shutters sealed,
for the storms that will surely follow,
from incessant grey banks of bloated sky.

Life then calms to a passive beat,
locked in fire-clad rooms,
spectacles poised on nose-tips,
books splayed out, crisp pages yellowed,
to immerse in some other landscape.

Stews bubbling in crusty iron pots,
pervade in redolent pleasure,
while the cat curled up one inch from aflame,
soaks the glamoured radiant burn,
in metered squeaky snores.

And toes wiggle in plump wool socks,
the flames lapping listlessly at the shore,
and minds adrift in fantasy lands,
far from the frosted reality world outside,
pounding winds upon the door.

And no-one dares breach this hum,
this nest of sated repose,
when winter’s gnarled hands strangle,
there is no other place
one would choose to be,
than tucked away, book in hand,
purring cat, at home.

Oh how I love your weather reports, Tony. And you are so right, the best place to be during approaching storm is warm and cozy at home. Beautifully penned verse.

What an awesome photo header, the white being nudged from it’s path to the approaching evil darkest clouds. Bad storm approaching, riders on the storm galloping behind to pour their wrath upon the ground. No better place than to be comfortable within a home filled with warmth, fireplace burning, the aromas of fresh bread and stews being served up. Our favorite pet, meowing or snoring near the hearth. Our pens ready to write or instrument ready to play. The storm approaches and lashes out the howling bitter sleet and snow that will cover the ground and leave it’s carpet of white, it’s first of many. Cheers my friend, keep the apple cider flowing.
