Death is but a Mirror to Accept

Death is but a Mirror to Accept
Death is but a Mirror to Accept

As death stares back with ambivalence,
we tremble in our mortal bones,
unable to negotiate, refusing to let go,
and yet finality is built into our DNA,
nothing further to say
but thanks for the memory.

While we struggle to find worth,
argue our good deeds outweighed our sins,
we face the inevitable disclosure,
the taming of what we’ve gleaned,
truth an improbable foe,
wasting years of misdirection we know.

Yet death cares not our bleating,
and judgement falls not on our head,
it in our realization that falls on the heart instead,
when we face ourselves, wins and sins,
and try to justify the learning
when we fell from grace.

We are the sum of our collective living,
decisions made, hope decayed
and the calamity we created in giving,
as our imperfect wants made
the pathways we tread
and the falling from the words we said.

We stand facing a mirror,
the curse of judgement a painful plight,
when we knew what was right
but chose otherwise,
yet what good is self, by itself,
that is the question, the measure of worth.

To face death with acceptance is rare,
but in that we accept ourselves,
our intentions and hopes aspired,
and even in failure there is honor,
when we learn we can do better,
as it is our hearts intention
that gives breadth to a life lived.

Joseph Campbell spoke of how to follow your bliss. He explained that it means to go where the body and soul wants to go, where one reaches their bliss: being, full consciousness, and rapture. To grab hold of joy brings peace to the heart and life is refreshing. I believe if one reaches this state then it is easier to accept death. Tony, your life lessons are always so interesting and I enjoy reading these works.

To me death is just transition and nothing more, so I look forward to death as I look forward to life, both the two sides of one coin. Cheers!
