That Breath Before a Button Pushed

One Button Pushed…

Albeit the lull before the storm,
the pause between intent and action
is an baleful void in view of what’s at stake;
and in this blank vessel of possibility,
the mind races to unwanted ends,
the disasters beyond our worst dreams unfold,
in that one moment as fate decides its play,
and we in hopes of resolution,
test the vulnerability of our inept state.

Conflict has become a global mark,
each small fire turned to blaze of wrath and aftermath,
the instantaneous evolution of security,
we by choice did count on,
could simply go within one moment of release;
and the silence would be deafening,
as death spreads like a slow mist,
inevitable and drawn,
its knowing the suffering of humanity.

Yet, in the silence of this lapse,
this pregnant pause before a breath,
there can be reprieve,
a modicum of common sense relieves a rash decision,
and peace, although never accepted,
could by the contrast shown,
transform a deadly end to new beginning,
where loss outbids gain and in the name of war too much,
to escalate our end for what?
