The Greater Loss of Temptation’s Embrace

The sting of loss…

Man plays a poignant game with temptation,
the recompense never quite acknowledged,
the circumstances not advantaged,
and when enticement is so beguiling,
overwhelming to the afferent self,
walls of protection dissipate
and temptation leads a soul to hell,
carried on a feather,
a tether so light the passage is but a dream.

But even dreams have a hold on the soul,
and transgressions more so,
as undone a life can become
when temptation overawes a better judgement,
and falling is all that’s left to an iniquitous step,
regret a sting not forgotten,
as redemption can be a far greater travail
in light of what is lost, what is betrayed and failed.

Tis not the small temptations,
the treats that give us pleasure,
but those of the flesh, the sins against one another
that mark the beginnings of pain,
and ironically it is those that we so carelessly delude ourselves,
refuse the reason to quench a thirst, or greed,
that brings us to our knees,
and often in loss appease our selfishness,
our momentary weakness.
