Winter Days, Flight Delays…
Winter Days bring flight delays as passengers watch helplessly
Wind, and snow, and hail, and rain, all seemingly working together
Airport windows fogged and cold as children peer at the runways
Stranded jets, their engines idle, sit waiting for hours on end
Luggage piled along the terminal walkways, waiting to be loaded
The endless announcements on the public address offer no salvation
Often followed by the groans and jeers of frustrated passengers
The crowds build and the lines grow longer and longer and longer
Every seat filled, every power port connected to an electronic device
Passing time on the internet, playing games, others take a nap
Frequent fliers next to first timers, status that has lost its status
Everyone waits the same, sitting together, sharing the pain
Families with kids struggle to keep composure and the hours pass
Businessmen continue their business, someway, somehow, in the chaos
And the noise of hundreds of bodies all speaking at once
Conversations erupt among strangers, briefly and them abruptly end
Airport food the only recourse, as lunchtime evolves to dinner time
Runways being plowed and the darkness falls, yet still the stillness
The hopeful ones stand near the gate, if somehow that will matter
Jackets unzipped, collars loosened as the temperature keeps rising
Tempers follow, sometimes unexpectedly, as does the frustration
The daily dance of air travel has come to a crashing halt
Travelers question the lack of technology, meteorology, even astrology
Asking why the situation couldn’t be avoided in the modern age
No one likes to sit and wait, they want to get going, everyone is late
Yet no speech or wish will change the day, or the weather they say
So instead we watch and wait, staring at the snow, counting flakes
With luck most won’t have to spend the night, or so they hope
The airlines tease us with information, trying not to say cancellation
But deep down inside most know the situation
Mother Nature has the final say, whether we’ll be coming home today
And so we sit, and think about our comfy bed, our couch, and stove
If luck prevails we’ll be boarding soon, taking off, and heading home
The PA sings with musical news, attention folks, the storm is lifting soon

Well expressed Ralph, nothing worse than being stranded at an airport, and as you say Mother Nature always has the last say. Nice work my friend..
Good grief ! What a horrible way to spend the day! I have never had to experience that – it sounds like a nightmare. Well done, Ralph.
Well expressed and most creative. I have never flown during holiday time and I know that I would not want to.
