Upon a Sea of Rolling Golden Light

Through endless grass in swaying heat,
each step a rustling dryness, a crackle,
a golden brittle sheet of rolling yellow sea;
between hill and vale under the blue forever
I wander, my thoughts on breeze amid the day,
and home is far, beyond the rocky crags and ferns,
but no compulsion drives me to return,
as day yields slowly to the turn of phrase,
and soon night will capture my open heart,
discerning shades of gloaming light
in melding radiance spayed.
Palms outstretched upon the grassy tops,
stork-drawn lines upon tingling flesh,
enliven mind immersed in rolling tide,
as eyes closed in afferent calm,
relive those halcyon days
of summer’s warmth imbibed,
when laughter sang like birdsong,
as hearts in joy relished youth,
and all those moments brought along,
as testament to pleasured life,
and family days fulfilled.
As stars return to sight,
and as orange skies infuse and tinge the purple mantle,
town lights glimmer in distance, and home
once again beckons me to listen,
to the silent comfort of my old chair, a book part read,
awaits a mind lost in day,
and I relent and turn back t’ward home,
a mile or so my way, the track of my wandering
to follow all I know to stay the path,
a pondering mind bookmarked,
another time to read.

Tis so pleasing to linger yet longer on the rolling golden sea. This is like the little mountain behind my home that has a sea of golden grass I love to watch when the breezed makes it sway. Your verse is lovely, Tony – puts me there in the midst of your golden sea. Nicely penned.
Thanks Phyllis, yes I too love that rolling sea of grasses or crops in a breeze. Nature is such a wonder in any perspective as life is really a mystery begging to be solved, known. Yet, just observing it is enough. Have a great day.
Lovely poetic thoughts Tony. Love the thought of a field like a rolling golden sea. Took me right back to a colorful summer.
Glad you enjoyed it Rasma, nature in its splendor. Take care.
