As waters fall from cliffs so high,
and glacial aqua mists
churned by rising updrafts try,
to find the earth beneath,
birds hover above the rush,
almost still they trust the rising currents,
and circle in the joy of freedom’s call.
And below, where water crashes
in chilled surging style,
the sound so emotive, so fresh and alive,
I try to breathe it in so deeply,
as it vitalizes my being;
where carpet grasses filled with bovine dreams,
flourish, and nourish those quaint houses,
nestled amid this vibrant green.
As sun moves mountain shadows,
and pines so tall accept the morning light,
villages light up from slumber deep,
to keep their fires aglow
and know another day does greet,
in this wonderland,
this valley so rich in being, so fresh in seeing
life in much pleasured green serenity.
Above the skies with few white plumes,
of vast and endless hues of blue,
contrast that crystal water and green rolling slopes,
the scope of which I’ve never seen,
and farmers alight to gather their bovine brown and whites,
to pens and morning milking task
the daily march to the sheds,
and in lines, their slowly stride the path.
All the while that fall of misted water,
echoes like an eloquent song of nature’s way,
music to accompany day in alpine life,
and I so many times dream of waking to that way of life,
so far from noise and contention,
high in the Alps, where life is a slow metronome,
attesting beauty in a valley home,
with cows to sing you to sleep.
