My Ego Wears a Cardigan
Toward the end the beginning seems further,
and dull those memories become,
so far back tis but a glimmer of what begun,
and in constant change that life I used to have,
has transformed beyond my perceptions.
In age those memories fade,
as if slightly blurred by a failing sight,
and one cannot abide that time,
for life does change so much, despite,
without constant reaffirming, one can feel lost.
The future glimmers with perhaps a lesser light,
the unknown less than in youth it might,
and so the expectations fade also,
winning dreams and conquests a lesser hold,
on an ego mellowed by wisdom.
Yet there is a comfort in water under that bridge,
what used to rush now flows,
and who knows, we may even notice more,
as life in time flies, but in perception slows,
its movement more understood.
A warm and consoling embrace
is all that graces these bones,
as such revelations and minds so blown,
now settle like silt on a river floor,
depths of knowledge and even more reside.
And words flow like that river, without prompt,
just the knowing that an old soul recounts,
as time ebbs away, and life in echo
comes to mind in answers, not just questions,
as ego wears a cardigan, with slipper-ed feet by a fire warm.

Ah! to grow old gracefully – t’would be so comforting. For some reason I find myself busier with memories sharper than five or even ten years ago. Maybe I am just cramming as much as I can in before I shut down? LOL I enjoyed reading your thoughts on this Tony. Great work.
Thanks Phyllis, yes, its not so dire, in fact age has many, many rewards. Glad you enjoyed the thoughts.
That was stunning Tony and the title and image drew me in. The last two lines were a brilliant image. Nice work.
Thanks Lori, so pleased you enjoyed my thoughts. Take care.
I really enjoyed this poem and the wonderful description of aging, Tony. Perfect imagery.
Pleased you enjoyed it John, much appreciated my friend.
Well it ages me to admit I understand this, lol. Good thing we have all the excitement in our youth huh? Comfort does seem to be the choice. A very warm finish.
Glad you related Jackie, or perhaps sad you did. lol We all relate. Cheers!
