A Vengeful Father

The Vengeful Father…a tale

The Vengeful Father

He strode on cobblestone streets,
long legged strides of imperatives to meet,
and his top-hat all jaunty just so,
his arms straight and forthright swung low,
and intention furrowed his brow,
to the magistrate he’d found, his petition disallowed;
and now to the high court judge he’d go,
a friend of his wife’s family, you know,
to elicit support in his quest to bestow,
the highest penalty to this boyfriend, his foe.

You see the stinker had stolen
the heart of his eldest daughter,
Felicity by name, but disreputable by nature,
and this upstart not a penny to bare,
no title, no career, just a fop without care,
and with no future seen, and his daughter in tow,
he had absconded from old London,
and in her had dethroned,
so a petition he signed
for her kidnapper to pay, abide by the law,
and in jail to stay.

The judge was all gruff,
when he walked into his chamber,
‘The girls twenty five, sir,
free will she can labour,’
no matter the pain of a fair loving father,
she is alone responsible
for her decisions hereafter,
and so with rage in his soul and with white knuckled fists,
he returned to his home for a pistol to enlist.

Two days in a coach, and another on foot,
he found them in woodlands
just outside Tatum’s Rush,
and by fire a flickering and in the dead of the night,
one shot to the naives heart
ended his plight,
and the daughter so frail and devastated, fainted,
returning to home with a father now tainted,
and never will she forgive him
for the love he had stolen,
the love of her life, her heart permanently broken.

Such a sad tale, indeed. Very well-written, Tony. Your poem moves right along, kind of bouncy and easy to follow. Poor young daughter so heartbroken. Great verse, Tony.

Glad you enjoyed it Phyllis, I’m just shaking things up, and changing style and topic, just to challenge the mind.

Well, I like this challenge you put yourself to, Tony. To challenge ourselves once in awhile is a good thing for the mind and the soul. I love all your work.
