Echoes can be heard in dreams so real,
as if history re-addressing past in compromise,
making peace with thorns that still sting,
and wounds forgotten but still baring scars.
They just appear, unwanted, uninvited,
plaguing memories in an editors hands,
yet they still mark flesh, in a resounding hurt,
of what before has taken dreams and plans.
Sometimes they help in realizations,
but also can burn the scars already made,
and I greet them unwillingly, disgruntled,
as they saturate my mind with discomfort, penance paid.
And what I thought buried long ago,
comes back to taint my conscious state,
like a reminder of my past mistakes,
echoing in a future of my profound escape.
Retrospect is a double edged blade,
both regret and salvation within its cutting edge,
and I must live with both to move on,
no use in ill-feelings or dark reproach.
Forgiveness is all one can do,
for all circumstance has many sides,
and holding on just tethers us to woe,
repeating those mistakes we hold too long, before letting go.
