The Wrath Approaches
The wrath of winter’s breath avenges day,
for all the warmth now felt in stark decay,
and squalls tear leaves from limb and flighted they,
their crisp’n autumn browns a blur.
How quickly turns the mood, a sad refrain,
that oppression of sombre clouds and rain,
cleansing gloomy and broken autumn days,
to taste that bitter chill of what’s to come.
I choose not to see this maelstrom,
this rattled turbulence,
clattering shutters and windows tightly closed,
and rather I by fireside, tapping keys in warmth of glow,
the unsettled sounds alone enough to bear.
She comes, I hear her panting breath,
her stripping trees to claws and would be death,
and ice she bares her burden given,
for all to desperate find a slumber gift.
How I despise her harsh intent,
yet find comfort in hiding silent all warm, content,
while fierce wars of cloud and wind ensues,
painted so eloquently is darkened hues.
Tis but a passing phase,
a malevolent stir of nature’s whim,
yet this in time, and having been cleansed and purified by din,
will find the sun again,
to blaze life to gasp a re-birthed breath,
and all will spring to life, once more.

And we hunker down, cozy in, let her pass us by, knowing the freshness of spring will come again. Beautiful, Tony, sheer perfection of winter thoughts. We are fortunate to have the warmth of the writer’s skills running through our veins. I love the way you paint with words and bring things to life, I could see the images and feel the chill. Beautiful.
Thanks Phyllis, glad you enjoyed it. I always enjoy writing about the beauty of nature and the natural world, it is always a gratifying journey. Take care.
Are you entering your winter months in Australia? If you are it can’t be as harsh as our Canadian winters surely, I know the cold, snow, ice, winds all too well my friend. I long for Spring and new life sprouting all about, leaving the cold and bitter snow to melt and feed the soil of life. Winter is not my favorite season, however, I must confess, I love the snow nothing more. Beautifully penned my artistic friend.
Yes, we’re about to come into winter and the weather is turning. Yes I understand, Canadian winter’s are a different thing entirely. It’s more the gloom that effects me, the lack of light. But as you say the following spring can make up for it all. Nature’s palette is indeed diverse and renders beauty in so many ways. Cheers!
You weave such a nice balance of horrific winter weather combined with a cozy fireside chair – the reader is easily transformed into the scenario and can almost see the frost on the outside of the window – nice work
Much appreciated Ralph, glad you enjoyed it.
